In the 1960s, construction began on one of Kazakhstan’s largest hydraulic engineering projects on the Ili River. In 1969, the river was dammed, and in 1970, the filling of the reservoir commenced. As a result, the Kapchagai Reservoir was created, located in the Almaty Region, approximately 80 kilometers from Almaty. The reservoir stretches about 180 kilometers in length, covers an area of over 1,840 square kilometers, and reaches a maximum depth of 46 meters. During filling, the settlement of Iliysk was submerged.
