The National Russian Drama Theatre named after M. Yu. Lermontov is one of the oldest and most significant theaters in Almaty. It was founded in 1933 and became the first professional Russian drama theater in Kazakhstan. The theater opened its first season in Semipalatinsk and began performing in Alma-Ata in 1934. In 1964, on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the great Russian poet, the theater was named after Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov.
