Alma-Arasan Gorge is a beautiful mountain gorge located in the south-western part of Almaty, on the northern slope of the Zailiysky Alatau ridge. It lies at an altitude of approximately 1,780 to 1,835 meters above sea level. The Prohodnaya River flows through the gorge, which is why it is sometimes called the Prohodnoe Gorge. The name “Alma-Arasan” translates from Kazakh as “Apple Hot Spring”, because warm thermal springs and wild apple trees have existed here since ancient times.
