The Monument to M.K. Gandhi was installed in Almaty in October 2003 at the initiative of the Embassy of India in Kazakhstan. The sculpture was created by Indian artist Gautam Pal, and Gandhi’s granddaughter Sumitra Kulkarni attended the opening ceremony. The monument depicts Gandhi walking with a staff and is based on the design of an earlier monument erected in Moscow.
