High above Almaty, at an altitude of about 1,750 meters, stands the powerful Medeu mudflow protection dam. Built to protect the city from destructive mudflows descending from the glaciers of the Zailiysky Alatau, it has become a true shield for the southern capital of Kazakhstan. The dam is 150 meters high, 530 meters long along the crest, and can hold up to 12.6 million cubic meters of mud and debris.
