The Republican Academic German Drama Theatre is one of Kazakhstan's most distinctive cultural institutions. Its history began in 1975 with the creation of the first German theatre company, while the official theatre opened in Temirtau in 1980. In 1989 it moved to Almaty, where it continues its work today. In 2016 the theatre was awarded Academic status.
